Welcome to Professor Steven Fine and Rabbanit Leah Fine.
Rabbanit Leah Fine will be giving a dvar torah following Friday evening services, and Prof. Steven Fine will be giving a lecture following Saturday morning services entitled “Lulavim in the Time of Chazal.”
Professor Steven Fine is a distinguished historian of Judaism in the Greco-Roman World and a professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University in New York. Among his many books is The Menorah: From the Bible to Modern Israel (2016), a history of the menorah in Jewish art and culture.
Rabbanit Leah Fine is a chaplain at Riker’s Island in New York. She holds an MA in Modern Jewish History from Yeshiva University and graduated Yeshivat Maharat in 2023, also studying at Pardes, Drisha, Hebrew University, and the i-Center. The Fines co-authored Where God Dwells: A Child’s History of the Synagogue (1999).

Baruch-Lev Kelman, rabbinic intern of Congregation Shearith Israel will be delivering the Shabbat Shuva drasha. Baruch-Lev is a Doctoral Fellow and rabbinical student at Yeshiva University and serves as the Rabbinic Intern at Congregation Shearith Israel. He will be joining us for Shabbat along with his wife, Suzanne.

Scholar in Residence, Professor Barry Strauss gave three talks throughout Shabbat. Prof. Struass is the Corliss Page Dean Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Bryce and Edith M. Bowmar Professor of Humanistic Studies Emeritus at Cornell University, where he taught for over four decades. He is a military and naval historian with a focus on ancient Greece and Rome and their lessons for today. He is the author of many books, including Jews vs. Rome: Two Centuries of Rebellion Against the World’s Mightiest Empire (2025).
A special weekend in Newport, America at 250 and the Future of the Jewish People: Reflections on a Weekend on which we Commemorate Kristallnacht, Mark Veterans Day, and Ponder the Future featuring four powerful talks by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik and an uplifting musical performance by Magevet, Yale’s premier Jewish a capella group.
